DIY Floating Shelf Stocking Hanger

Can you believe Christmas is almost here? Fa la la la la and eggnog… the Christmas story and carolers… pretty lights and presents… snowflakes and gloves… there are so many small things that make up that Christmas feeling. And it all brings about such a feeling of excitement!

One special tradition we sisters grew up with, as I’m sure have many of you, is Christmas morning stockings! How much fun. Mom always found the cutest little unique and personal things for our stockings and I am trying to carry that on with my own family. In 2014, I made stockings for me and my honey to celebrate our first Christmas together. Last year, we added James’ to the fam and now this year, I have made one for Simon! Trust me, even though it’s not in the pictures, it is made, just sent off to my friend’s to have his name embroidered on the cuff. Nothing like last minute. ;oP

This is our first Christmas in this house, and I realized I needed a way to hang our stockings together! It adds so much to the Christmas decor to see a row of stockings awaiting Christmas morning. 😉

DIY Floating Shelf Stocking Hanger

I started out with a floating shelf. This one I actually found at a thrift store, but you can find a similar one here. Since it was black, I spray painted it the color I wanted it using this paint. Then I sanded the edges to give it a bit more rustic look.

My husband had a scrap 1×3 piece of pine that he cut the same length as the shelf and we attached that below the shelf after attaching 4 hooks.

Then you can have fun decorating the shelf! My bright sparkly green trees were also thrift store finds. If you have never looked through the holiday sections of thrift stores, you may be missing out on some greats finds! These were quite battered and bent up, but I was able to fix them up and add the gold and red balls. They are the perfect addition to our bright red and green decor.

My JOY letters were from a previous year. They are just inexpensive cardboard letters. I had mod podged some scrapbook paper onto them, but didn’t quite like the look with this new shelf. After spray painting them metallic gold, they look just right on my shelf.
