Easy DIY Kids Desk {on a budget}
Do you have a small, unused space in a bedroom or playroom? It needs this desk!
My boys have had this empty space between their bunkbed and balcony doors for months. I knew something could go there, but what? I couldn’t buy a desk to fit the space because it would stick out too far, and it wouldn’t be wide enough. And I didn’t want to spend much money on anything custom-built or fancy. I needed this to be budget-friendly. My solution: this Easy DIY Kids Desk {on a budget}!
WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS EASY DIY KIDS DESK
All you need is a piece of wood that fits the size of your space (make sure it’s at least 1″thick so it’s sturdy) + these IKEA legs. These adjustable IKEA legs come in several colors – beige, black, blue, silver, or white – and the screws and metal plates are included. These legs are currently $3/each.
(By the way, I drilled those holes in the top 2 corners of this desktop so that I can drop little plastic cups of some kind in them for pencil holders – I’m thinking empty spice containers?? We’ll come up with something.) 😉
HERE’S HOW EASY IT IS TO MAKE THIS DIY KIDS DESK
First, paint your design on. I did colors to match my boys room decor, so we started by painting the desk green, then we taped off a chevron pattern and added more color to the design.

I sprayed it with a clear finish, and I love how it turned out!!
Now to attach the legs – it’s really easy. You just line up the plates onto the underside of your desk and attach them, then the IKEA legs screw into the plate. I let my boys do that part.
>>By the way, I have to stop and rave about our new drill. This thing. is. powerful. LOVE IT! For years, we’ve had this low-power junky drill that we didn’t know was causing so much trouble in our life, ha! We always especially struggled with getting things into our concrete and brick walls over here in Greece. Hanging pictures on the wall is no easy chore! Now, with this baby, it’s so quick and painless! My husband loves this drill so much that he is constantly ASKING me if we need anything hung on the walls – um, that’s a win! So if you need a new drill, my husband and I wouldn’t think twice about recommending this DeWalt to you (we even got my dad one for Father’s Day and he loves his!)
Ok, so after you have attached the legs, stand the desk up in its new space. The great thing about these IKEA legs is that they are adjustable, so check the desk and see if any of the legs need to be longer to level it out.
