DIY Crochet Circle Puff Pillow Pattern

CROCHET PUFF PILLOW FREE PATTERN

Recently I found a free popcorn stitch flower pattern on bhookedcrochet.com, and the bold and beautiful design was just begging to be turned into BIG form and take center stage. 🙂 Brittany mentioned in the instructions that this flower pattern can just continue and continue by following “the rules of crocheting in the round.” I have done a lot of crocheting, but I wasn’t sure what exactly that was . . . so I had to look it up 😉 It was a very simple rule to follow, and I kept crocheting and crocheting until I used up my whole skein of yarn to make an 18″ pillow front! I’ll take you step by step through the process and show you how simple it is to make one yourself. A statement pillow in the exact color that you want can cost a pretty penny . . . this one only cost $9.

What you need to make your own 18″ pillow:

1 skein yarn (I used the new Big Twist yarn from Joann’s – used a 40% off coupon and got it for under $2)
Size H crochet hook
20″ backing fabric (can literally be ANYthing from home decor fabric to knit to calico – mine was $2)
20″ fabric for inner pillow (this won’t be seen; any fabric will do – I got a thin calico for $2)
fiberfill (I got a 24 oz. bag for under $3 and I think it’s enough for 2 pillows)

First you’ll want to head over to http://www.bhookedcrochet.com/2013/04/26/popcorn-stitch-flower/ and watch the video and learn how to make the popcorn stitch flower. Then once you get a small flower made, you’ll follow the rule of crocheting in a round. (I’ll write it out for you so you don’t have to look it up yourself!)

So the rest of the rounds would be –

Round 4: {1 popcorn between first set of petals, 2 popcorns between next set of petals, 2 popcorns between next set of petals} repeat all the way around.

Round 5: {1 popcorn between first set of petals, 1 popcorn between next set of petals, 2 popcorns between next set of petals} repeat all the way around.

Round 6: {1 popcorn between first 3 sets of petals, 2 popcorns in between next set of petal} repeat all the way around. (so every 4th set of petals gets a double popcorn)

Round 7: {1 popcorn between first 4 sets of petals, 2 popcorns in between next set of petal} repeat all the way around. (s0 every 5th set of petals gets a double popcorn – see the pattern?)

Round 8: {1 popcorn between first 5 sets of petals, 2 popcorns in between next set of petal} repeat all the way around.

Round 9: {1 popcorn between first 6 sets of petals, 2 popcorns in between next set of petal} repeat all the way around.

Round 10: {1 popcorn between first 7 sets of petals, 2 popcorns in between next set of petal} repeat all the way around.

Round 11: Sc all the way around.

Done!

This is what the completed big round flower looks like!

Now to make it into a pillow.

To make the pillow insert, cut 2 circles by laying the crochet circle on 2 layers of fabric and cutting around it.

Layer them right sides together, and sew around the edges in a 1/2″ seam, leaving a small hole so you can stuff it with the fiberfill.

Turn it right side out and fill it with fiberfill.

Close up the hole – you can either hand sew or machine stitch.

So that’s the pillow insert! 🙂

Now for the “pillowcase”, print the pillow back pattern, tape it together, and cut two of them.

Hem the flat edges like so.

Overlap them 2 inches and sew a few inches where they overlap.

That will be your pillow back. Lay the right side of the crochet pillow front on top of the right side of the pillow back.

Sew all the way around, just catching in the sc border on the pillow front, try not to catch in any popcorns.

Turn right side out and ta-da! Completed pillowcase.

Put the pillow insert into your pillow cover and it’s finished!

Now you can easily remove the pillow cover to clean it – hand wash in cold water and let line dry.

So pretty!!!

Crochet Puff Pillow Pattern

Ingredients

1 skein yarn - size 4 / 6 oz.
Size H crochet hook
20″ backing fabric
20″ fabric for inner pillow
fiberfill

Instructions

Round 1: Create a slip knot and ch 2. Sc 8 times in the chain next to the hook and join with a slst forming a ring. (8 stitches)
Round 2: Ch 3 and form a popcorn stitch in the same stitch as your ch 3. Close your popcorn stitch by chaining 1. Make a popcorn stitch in each sc stitch all the way around your loop. (8 popcorn stitches=8 petals) Join with a slst into the bottom ch 3 of the first petal of this round.
Round 3: Chain 3 and form a popcorn in the same stitch. Close the popcorn stitch by chaining 1. (you will add one more popcorn stitch to this section at the end of the round). *Create two popcorn stitches between the next two petals from the second round. You will insert your hook under the chain that closed off your popcorn stitches. Repeat all the way around and finish off the round by adding one more popcorn stitch between the petals where the first popcorn stitch was made. Join with a Slst into the ch 3 of the first popcorn stitch. (16 popcorn stitches=16 petals).
Round 4: {1 popcorn between first set of petals, 2 popcorns between next set of petals, 2 popcorns between next set of petals} repeat all the way around.
Round 5: {1 popcorn between first set of petals, 1 popcorn between next set of petals, 2 popcorns between next set of petals} repeat all the way around.
Round 6: {1 popcorn between first 3 sets of petals, 2 popcorns in between next set of petal} repeat all the way around. (so every 4th set of petals gets a double popcorn)
