Oh.My.Goodness, you guys. Are not these these the cutest things you ever did see? I mean, seriously, SO CUTE and CLEVER!! Recently, we were at someone’s house for dinner and they had these cute chalkboard lids for mason jars. Such a brilliant idea for everyone to be able to write their name on the lid and keep track of their glass. My mom mentioned that she would love them as a birthday gift. (When she says something like that, we all take note of it!) Our hostess told us where they were from, but I searched and searched online for them with no luck. I guess they must have been discontinued. I was so disappointed to not find them! Actually I found one seller on Ebay and they wanted a ridiculous price. I saw the lids with straws in cute colors all over the internet, but not the chalkboard ones with the straws. So, I got to thinking. I could probably make these! And, I knew I could make them for a much cheaper price than that Ebay seller!
I’m so happy to share this DIY Chalkboard Mason Jar Straw Lids post with you! I’d love for you to see just how easy these are to make! And, these are perfect for summer with picnics and reunions coming up. You won’t have to worry about the kids (or maybe you . . ????haha!) spilling their drinks or have any bugs landing in your glass. And better yet, no one’s glasses will be getting mixed up!
Here’s what you need:
- small mouth mason jar lids
- 5/16″ rubber grommet (I got these from Home Depot)
- chalkboard paint
- power drill with a 3/8″ drill bit (or a step bit)
- a scrap piece of wood to drill into
Trace around one lid (not a ring) onto a piece of paper for a template. Cut the circle out and fold the circle in half, then fold in half again to find the center. Cut a little snip in the center.
Now, place that circle template on top of the wrong side of the mason jar lids. Use a pen to mark the center on all the lids.
Using a power drill with a 3/8″ drill bit, drill a hole into the center of the lids. (My Dad did these ones for me and he used a step bit, drilling to the fourth line from the top, i.e. the 3/8″ marking. The step bit is not a necessity, but it makes it very, very easy!)
Place your lid on the scrap piece of wood and using your center marking, drill until you’re all the way through. If you have some sharp edges, just trim with some metal snips. I found that drilling the opposite way through the hole smoothed out the edges of the circle as well. It doesn’t have to be perfect, because it will be covered by the rubber grommet.
(the hole could be offset, too . . .whatever you prefer!)
Clean the surface of your lids before you paint.
Now you are ready to paint! I love the chalkboard paint I used. I decided on your traditional black chalkboard look, but there are also a variety of colors to choose from. Folk Art offers so many amazing colors! (Another option would be to paint them with chalkboard spray paint.)
I laid down a piece of wax paper to paint on. At first, I tried a sponge paint brush, but the surface just wasn’t getting as smooth as I desired. I found much better results with a brush about this size. Paint your first coat keeping it as smooth as possible.
Let the paint dry for 2 hours before applying a second coat. Don’t rush your drying time!! (Don’t forget the edge of the lid. ????) I found three coats of paint was perfect. Remember, to paint it as smooth as you can get it.
I let mine dry completely overnight. If you have any paint on the underside of the lids, just wash it off or scrape it off with your fingernail.
Now all you need to do is slide the rubber grommets into the holes. (It might take a little wiggling.)
And there you have it . . . it’s that easy!
If you plan to use thicker straws, you’ll need to drill a slightly larger hole and use a larger grommet. I used these Pioneer Woman plastic reusable straws and they fit perfectly into the 3/8″ hole with the 5/16″ grommet. If you find the straws to be a bit tight going through the hole, just get the straw wet and it should slide right through.
Assemble it with the ring onto your mason jar and it’s ready to go. And, don’t forget the chalk pencils. I love those things! They’re so much easier to use than a boring old piece of chalk! As you can tell, I had fun writing my name and drawing some flowers. ????
(Clean with a damp cloth.)
Now just fill it up with some hibiscus tea or ginger mint lemonade. ????Aahhh, so refreshing!
