DIY Home Sign – Easy Farmhouse Decor

This is such a fun diy home sign to make! And, with Christmas just around the corner, it’s an easy farmhouse craft to make the perfect gift for someone special! If you know someone who loves all the farmhouse decor, they are sure to love this diy home sign!

DIY Home Sign – Easy Farmhouse Decor

The steps to this diy home sign are simple.

Here they are in a nutshell:

make your solid wood piece
paint and sand your letters
make an “O” wreath
attach the letters and wreath
add a piece of robe to hang

FOR THE WOOD PIECE:

So, I started with some old fence pieces I had, but pallet wood would work great as well. Basically, you just need some old wood of some sort! Or, these pieces from Hobby Lobby would work just as well! You could also use an old section of a fence or buy fence pickets for cheap from Home Depot.

My wood pieces were 3.25″ inches wide and about 1/2″ thick.

I cut down the wood pieces to 36.5″ in length.

Leaving about 1/2″ to 5/8″ between the slats, arrange them accordingly.

On the back, attach a piece of wood to hold them all together, like shown in the pictures below.

(you can also use an air nailer to attach the wood brace)

You should now have a piece put together that is approximately 36.5″ by 10.75″

Now that this is ready, just set it aside until needed again.

FOR THE LETTERS:

Using these paper mâché letters from Hobby Lobby really makes this project SO easy!

Obviously I purchase the H, M and E. 🙂

I started by painting a thin layer of gold paint. There’s no need to paint the back of the letters since they’ll be attached to the wood board piece.

This is the acrylic gold paint that I used.

Let it dry completely.

(I let mine dry overnight before continuing to the next step.)

Next, I painted the letters with an acrylic sand colored paint.

I used this paint.

Let this dry completely.

Using sand paper, sand areas of the letters and the letter sides until you achieve the look you desire. There’s definitely no “right” or “wrong” to this.

Here is a closeup of the sanding. I especially like to sand some of the letter edges to give it that nice distressed look.

Just sand until it looks the way you want it to look!

FOR THE WREATH:

I started with a 7-8″ simple grapevine wreath.

Next, I added some greenery like this.

And then I added just a few small white flowers.

Using floral wire and a hot glue gun, I simple arranged the greenery until I got the look I desired. The benefit of using a grapevine wreath is that you can stick the floral stems into the grapevine wreath branches to help hold it all in place.

Stick the greenery in the wreath, then use your floral tape to wrap around it to securely hold it. Use hot glue where needed.

If you don’t want to make a wreath, you can always purchase something already made like this one.

FOR THE ASSEMBLING:

Lay your letters and wreath out so it’s spaced out how you think it looks good.

Using a pencil, make a few little marks around the letters.

Using a hot glue gun, put hot glue on the back of the H, M, and E letters and glue to the wood board piece.

With a pencil, mark where you would want the cup hook to hang to hold the wreath.

Push the cup hook into the wood and turn to screw it fully.

Hang the wreath on the cup hook.

The last step is to attach your rope for hanging. I used about 3 ft. of this 3/4″ twisted rope from Home Depot.

Place masking tape around both ends of the rope to keep it from fraying.

Position it where you want it and from the back, screw it into place with a short screw.

I made a wreath like this to use during the holiday season!

Materials

3 wood pieces about 3.25" by 36.5" and about .5" thick
paper mâché letters (H, M & E) about 8.25" high
acrylic gold paint
sand colored paint
7-8" grapevine wreath
greenery
1/2" cup hook
about 3 feet of rope
drill and screws or air nailer
paint brush
sandpaper
hot glue gun
floral wire
masking tape

Instructions

Attach your wood pieces together leaving about 1/2-5/8" between the slats. Using a scrap piece of wood, attach to the back with a drill or air nailer to create one large wood piece ready to craft.
Paint the paper mache letters, first in gold, then in sand color allowing the paint to fully dry between colors.
Using sand paper, sand to create a distressed look.
Starting with a grapevine wreath as your base, attach greenery of your choice with hot glue and floral wire to create a beautiful wreath for your letter "O." (this step can be skipped if you choose to buy an already made wreath)
Lay your letters out and mark, then hot glue them to the wood board piece.
Attach the cup hook by marking where you want it first and then by simply pushing it into the wood and turning it to screw it fully in.
Attach the rope to the back of the board. Using masking tape around the ends of the rope will keep it from fraying.
Hang the lettter "O."
