If you’ve got some old pallet wood (or even if you don’t!!) you’re going to absolutely love this diy project I have for you! You can have this finished from start to finish in just a couple of hours. Seriously. . . I did it! So, grab your supplies, a cozy sweater, a hot latte and make this your weekend project! Let’s get crafting!
DIY RUSTIC CHRISTMAS JOY SIGN USING PALLET WOOD
Here’s what you need:
- pallet wood (if you don’t have old pallet wood, these pieces are great, too!)
- letter “J” and “Y” (wood letters would work great, too!)
- acrylic gold paint
- acrylic sand colored paint
- grapevine wreath
- christmas greenery — here’s what I used frosted pine needle pick, frosted lamb’s ear pick, and red berry cluster stem
- jute twine for hanging the finished product
And some basic supplies you’ll need:
- saw for cutting your wood pieces
- hammer & nails (or screws)
- paintbrush
- sand paper
- floral wire
- hot glue gun
IN A RUSH? PIN FOR LATER ::
Start by cutting your wood to an appropriate size. For me, since I used 8.25″ letters and a 10″ grapevine wreath, I cut my wood to 28″ in length. My wood was 3.5″ inch wide pieces, so I was happy with using just 3 wood pieces. If you use these pieces, they are already 28″ in length, so no extra step in cutting!
This can be totally customizable if you choose to go with bigger letters and a bigger wreath for the “O”. You’ll want to just lay your letters and wreath out on your wood and go from there. See what size looks best in comparison to the size of your letters and wreath.
I can totally see this as a huge wood sign, too!
Then attach a vertical piece of wood on the back of your wood sign pieces–as shown in this post.
I wanted a little bit of space between my wood pieces, so I didn’t put them right up against each other. I left about 1/2″ to 5/8″ gaps between my wood pieces.
Now you have one solid wood piece all connected and ready for crafting!
Next, paint your letters. I painted mine with gold first, let it dry and then painted with the sand color paint.
Next, I sanded the letters just slightly where I wanted that gold to come through giving it more of a distressed look.
Now, let’s work on the letter “O”. This step can be disregarded if you choose to go with an already made wreath. Before I decided to go with this option, I was so close to buying a small green wreath and just adding some berries. If you feel that you can’t do this part of it with the floral arranging, just find an already made small wreath that would work for the “O” and it will be just as well!
Here’s how I made my wreath that will be the letter “O” of JOY:
I started with an 8″ grapevine wreath and some Christmas-y looking floral picks.
I think we sisters ALL agree that Hobby Lobby is definitely the place for this! And, this time of the year, all– and I mean ALL– the Christmas stuff is 40% off, no coupon needed! Hobby Lobby for the win AGAIN!!
First I wrapped the frosted pine needle pick around the wreath. I had some floral wire and a hot glue gun on hand, and wherever it needed something, I added it. 🙂
Next, I took some of the frosted lamb’s ear pick (I cut them off in groups of 2-4 leaf clusters) and placed them where I thought it looked good.
Then, I took the red berry cluster stem and cut clusters of them off and added as the final touch to the wreath. It’s nice working with a grapevine wreath that you can kind of “dig” those stems in, too.
Now you’re ready to attach everything to your wood piece. I used hot glue to attach my letters and used a cup hook to attach the wreath.
Sometime I may want to change out the look of that letter “O” with another arrangement. So, if you use a cup hook, you can simply take the “O” off and hang a new “O” wreath. It’s nice not to permanently place it!
Last step was to attach the jute twine or rope to the back for hanging it to display. My first thought was using the jute twine and using the staple gun to attach it.
But, after I was in Home Depot and saw the cool looking rope you can buy by the foot, I went with the rope. So, a staple gun couldn’t be used to attach it to the wood because of the thickness of the rope; it had to be screwed in. But, if you go with a thinner rope or twine, the staple gun should work.
And there you have it. . . your completed beautiful project!
