PAINTED WOOD SLICE PUMPKIN
WITH “GIVE THANKS” TEMPLATE INCLUDED
HAPPY TUESDAY, EVERYONE!
I JUST LOVE FALL DECOR! ANYTHING PUMPKIN OR LEAVES OR CORNSTALKS, I LIKE IT ALL!! THIS PAINTED WOOD SLICE PUMPKIN ADDS THE PERFECT TOUCH. ????
I HAVE A TUTORIAL HERE FOR YOU TODAY ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN LITTLE PUMPKIN USING A WOOD SLICE.
Even if you’re not “a crafty person” this is something everyone can do. I had some leftover wood slices from another project that I needed to do something with. And what can be cuter than a pumpkin?! If you don’t have log slices available, that’s quite alright. You can find them at your local craft store or even on Amazon, like these ones.
PAINTED WOOD SLICE PUMPKIN
Here’s what you need:
- wood slice (mine was about 8″ x 7 1/4″)
- scrap wood for the stem
- orange acrylic paint
- brown acrylic paint
- tan acrylic paint
- black acrylic paint
- wood stain
- naturally coiled wire
- paint brush (I used a sponge brush for the pumpkin and a really small brush for the lettering.)
- exacto knife
- hot glue gun
- sealer (optional)
- “Give Thanks” template
(If you prefer to use a real wood slice instead of the packaged store bought ones, you’ll just need to sand the surface of the side you want to use for a smoother surface.)
SAND THE SURFACE OF THE WOOD SLICE ON THE SIDE YOU ARE GOING TO PAINT. (YOU DON’T NEED TO DO THIS STEP IF YOU BUY A READY TO PAINT WOOD SLICE.)
PAINT THE WOOD SLICE WITH YOUR ORANGE ACRYLIC PAINT LEAVING A SMALL MARGIN AROUND THE EDGE. LET DRY.
PAINT YOUR SCRAP OF WOOD. (I MESSILY PAINTED MINE WITH A TAN ACRYLIC PAINT, THEN THE BROWN ACRYLIC PAINT, THEN MORE TAN ACRYLIC PAINT. I LET IT DRY AND THEN SANDED IT DOWN. MAKE SURE THE SURFACE IS FREE OF DUST. THEN, TAKE YOUR WOOD STAIN, BRUSH A LITTLE OVER THE ENTIRE SURFACE AND WIPE OFF WITH A CLEAN CLOTH.)
WHILE THE WOOD IS DRYING, YOU CAN WORK ON YOUR “GIVE THANKS” TEMPLATE. PRINT AND ENLARGE OR REDUCE ACCORDING TO THE SIZE OF YOUR WOOD SLICE. USING YOUR EXACTO KNIFE, CUT AROUND EACH LETTER. THIS CAN TAKE A LITTLE TIME, BUT IN THE END YOU’LL HAVE A NICE STENCIL TO USE FOR YOUR LETTERING.
ONCE YOUR ORANGE PAINT IS DRY, LAY YOUR WORD TEMPLATE ON THE WOOD SLICE AND CENTER IT ACCORDINGLY. (MASKING TAPE IS GOOD FOR HOLDING THIS IN PLACE.) USING A PEN, TRACE AROUND EACH LETTER. REMOVE THE TEMPLATE AND USING YOUR BLACK ACRYLIC PAINT, PAINT THE WORDS.
CUT YOUR PAINTED WOOD SCRAP PIECE INTO 2-3 PIECES ACCORDING TO HOW YOU WANT THE STEM TO LOOK.
HOT GLUE THE STEM PIECES TO THE BACK OF THE PAINTED PUMPKIN.
WRAP THE COILED WIRE AROUND THE STEM. CURL THE ENDS. I WRAPPED MINE AROUND 2 PENCILS TOGETHER TO GET A NICE SIZE CURL. š
IF YOU’RE WANTING TO USE IT AS AN OUTSIDE DECORATION, BE SURE TO SPRAY IT WITH THE ACRYLIC COATING.
VOILA! NOW YOU HAVE A CUTE LITTLE PUMPKIN TO ADD TO YOUR FALL DECOR. š
