How to Make a Genuine Greek Frappe
If you’ve ever taken a trip to Greece, you most likely came back wondering how to make a genuine Greek frappe back home! Well, the secrets to making a genuine Greek frappe are easier than you think!
Believe it or not, a frappe isn’t made with special coffee beans or anything — it’s actually made from instant coffee! What’s awesome is that Amazon carries the Greek instant coffee that is used for Greek frappes! (They also carry it in decaf.) It does make a difference, compared to other instant coffees I’ve had. Here’s what it looks like:
So, here’s how simple it is to make a genuine Greek frappe:
1. Put about 2-3 teaspoons of Nescafe instant Greek coffee into a big glass (or use another instant coffee, but it won’t be quite so genuine) ;-).
2. Add sugar, if you like it sweet! Greeks order their frappe one of 3 ways — “sketo” (no sugar), “metrio” (1-2 spoons of sugar), or “glyko” (2-3 or even 4 spoons of sugar! Very sweet!) You can also say “me gala” if you want it with milk. I always order “ena frappe metrio me gala” (a frappe with medium sugar and some milk).
3. Now add a little water to your coffee-sugar mixture in your glass. (About 1/3 cup of water is good.)
4. Use an electric frother and froth your coffee until it’s nice and foamy and fills the glass about halfway. Sometimes they just use a shaker and add a couple ice cubes to help the frothing process, so you can do that if you don’t have an electric one.
5. Next, add ice to fill the cup, then {almost} top if off with water. Leave a little room for a splash of milk or half & half and add that last! Finished and ready to drink!
NOTE: Toward the end of the frappe, when there’s only foam left, it’s typical to add a little bit of water to stretch out your drink.
I made a video to show how simple it is!
