Can you cook rice in a crock pot?
Yes, let’s talk rice! It’s the ultimate comfort food, right? But cooking it perfectly can sometimes feel like rocket science. Enter: your crockpot. Yep, that’s right. This trusty kitchen appliance isn’t just for stews and soups. It’s a game-changer for rice, too! No more hovering over the stove, praying it won’t burn. With your crockpot, you can kick back, relax, and let it do the work for you. So, grab your apron, and let’s dive into the wonderful world of crock pot rice.
Why Use a Crockpot for Rice? First off, why bother with your crockpot when you’ve got a perfectly good stovetop? Well, for starters, it’s hassle-free. No more babysitting your rice pot. Just dump everything in, set it, and forget it. Plus, crock pot rice turns out fluffy and perfect every time. No more mushy or burnt grains. It’s like magic in a pot!
Choosing the Right Rice: Now, let’s talk rice selection. You’ve got . . .
- long-grain
- short-grain
- brown
- white—you name it. But for crockpot cooking, stick with the classics like long-grain white rice or jasmine rice. They cook up beautifully and won’t turn into a gloopy mess.
Make sure to rinse your rice before adding it to the crockpot!
Preparing Your Crockpot: Alright, time to prep your crockpot. Give it a light spray with some cooking oil to prevent any sticky situations. Or, if you’re feeling fancy, use a crockpot liner for easy cleanup. Then, toss in your rice and liquid. Just remember the golden rule: two parts liquid to one part rice.

Adding Flavors and Enhancements: Now, let’s kick things up a notch. Sure, plain rice is fine and dandy, but why not jazz it up a bit?
- Throw in some chicken broth for extra flavor or coconut milk for a tropical twist.
- Don’t be shy with the herbs and spices either. Garlic, onion, paprika—the world is your oyster!
- For a Mexican rice that tastes like Chipotle, add cilantro and lime juice. (my personal fav!)
Cooking Time and Temperature: This is where the magic happens. Set your crockpot to high for 1.5-2 hours. Just keep an eye on it towards the end to avoid any rice-related disasters. Nobody likes burnt rice!
Fluffing and Serving: Alright, your rice is cooked to perfection. Now what? Grab a fork and fluff it up to let out some steam. Give it a few minutes to chillax before serving. Then, dig in! Whether it’s alongside your favorite curry or flying solo, this crockpot rice is sure to steal the show. These are some of my favorite recipes to serve crock pot rice with:
- Orange Chicken (the easiest recipe!!)
- Copycat Nando’s Grilled Chicken
- Easy Greek Style Meatballs
