This monogram felt pouch is a perfect gift to give to someone you love, and it’s so neat to give something personalized just for them! I like to give people handmade gifts. 🙂 There’s just something special about it, and it’s something they’ll always remember.
Easy Felt Craft That Can Be Personalized {Great Gift Idea}
MAKE IT IN JUST AN HOUR!
For this project, you don’t even need to know how to use a sewing machine. It’s all hand sewn, and anyone can do it! It’s that simple. Wouldn’t this be a good little pouch to store phone cords or chargers in? That’s what I first thought of putting in it. If you’re like most people, you’re forever trying to find your cord or charger, right?! Put them in this little pouch and you’ll always know right where they are. This is a lightweight pouch, so you’re not going to want to store heavy items in it.
Joann Fabrics sells some really cute print pieces of felt as well. You could do a print felt piece and a solid monogram letter or shape for a different look. Let your creative juices flow and you’ll come up with something super cute, I’m sure of it!
It’s so simple to make this monogram felt pouch!
Here’s what you need:
a piece of felt (you can find these at Joanns for like $.29!–I used a piece 9 x 12)
some DMC floss
a scrap of fabric (about a 5″ square)
a scrap of fusible fleece (about a 5″ square)
a 7″ zipper
a printed letter or shape
Here’s what you do:
Start by making a line down the center (parallel to your short sides.) I made a couple of marks on each end as shown in the picture and connected my marks.
Now you’re going to make the hole for your zipper. From the ends where your center line is, measure about 1 1/4″ in and make a mark. Do the same thing from the other end.
Working off of your center marking line, measure 1/4″ from one side and mark it all the way down to the line you made in the previous step. Do the same thing on the other side of the center line.
You should now have a long, skinny rectangle marked on your felt. Take your scissors and cut out that rectangle like in the picture below.
Choose your font and letter and print it whatever size you want. You can see from the picture above the size of my letter in comparison to the felt.
Center it on your felt (as pictured above) and using a chalk marker, trace around it. By the way, this is the best chalk marker out there! I’ve tried so many different marking pens, markers, and pencils, and this is by far my favorite one. It’s so easy to use when you’re wanting nice lines. I love it!
So now I’ve marked around my letter. Snip into it with your scissors and cut along the lines.
Take your scrap print of fabric and fuse it to the scrap of fusible fleece. My scrap was a 5″ square and it was perfect size. Remember you’re going to need a piece as large as your letter or shape. If you make a larger or wider letter, you’ll need a larger piece.
Place your piece of felt over the fabric making sure your whole letter is covered. On the front, place pins around it and using all 6 strands of your floss, do a simple running stitch.
Now take your zipper and place it under that long, skinny rectangle. If your zipper is too long, you can cut off the little tails.
Place pins to hold it together as pictured below. (You’ll want the zipper tab snug up against your opening.)
Just like you did around your letter, do a running stitch with all 6 strands of floss around the zipper.
Your letter and zipper should all be in place now.
Fold your piece of felt in half as in the picture below and place pins around it.
(If you want to round your corners, now would be the time. Just place a glass or something round to use as your guide.)
Do a blanket stitch around the whole thing. I found this video helpful if you’re not sure of how to do a blanket stitch. I hadn’t done a that stitch in so long and needed a refresher.
That’s all there is to it!
