The kids I nanny had so much fun making this paper plate snake craft for an afternoon activity. They love learning about animals and love making animal crafts, so I knew this paper plate craft was going to be the perfect kids’ craft for them!

Paper Plate Snake Craft
Start by letting the kids paint a paper plate (or two or three, haha).
I like using this Crayola washable paint. And, just recently I came across these little washable paints at Dollar Tree for just $1. What’s nice about this is that you can just buy the colors you want or need. The multi-pack if great, but when I need 2-3 paints of the same color, these Dollar Tree ones are perfect!
You want to paint the underside of it, so turn it upside down before painting. Paint the entire plate.
Allow to dry.

After it is completely dry, draw the circular line on the paper plate as shown below. This makes it easy for the kiddos to follow the line to cut.
These classic Fiskar kids scissors are great, but if you’ve got little ones just starting to learn to cut, try these starter scissors. I had never seen these before. But, my sister, Liz, recently came across them and uses them with her 3-year old. She says they are good for toddlers since they really aren’t sharp in any way. So, if you have little ones that want to try to cut without you being concerned about them cutting themselves, give these a try. Plus, they are a little easier since they don’t have to try to put their fingers in any holes.
Have the kids cut the paper plate in a spiral by simply following the line.
After it’s cut, I like to angle the cut a bit to take away the sharpness in where you started.

Add googly eyes or draw eyes on.
Different sizes of googly eyes are fun, like this package! Kids can choose their own size preference. 🙂
This washable Elmer’s glue is great. It starts clear and dries clear. Plus, it’s safe and non-toxic.
After glueing on the eyes or using the self stick ones, add 2 dots for the nostrils and a mouth. The mouth can be drawn on or cut one out of construction paper or foam and glue to the back of the head.
Decorate the snakes with sequins, markers, foam stickers…..
let them use their imagination!!
