Straw Rockets Craft { with free rocket template }
With Apollo 11 being all the rage right now during their 50th anniversary celebration, my boys have been asking to make, color, and build rockets that look like Apollo 11.
My 7-year-old actually came up with this straw rockets craft idea, and he was so happy that I said it would make a great blog post so that other kids could enjoy straw rockets, too! š
We designed the free rocket template together, and after he advised me several times to make some changes (haha!), he finally approved our final rocket template. (Download is toward the end of our post.)
We’ve had so much fun launching our Apollo 11 straw rockets, and we hope you will, too!
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR OWN STRAW ROCKET:
Our printable rocket template
Scissors
Tape
2 straws – one thinner than the other
It’s pretty quick and easy to make these straw rockets – you’ll be launching them in no time!
HERE’S HOW TO MAKE YOUR STRAW ROCKET:
- Print our free rocket template and cut out both rockets.
- Cut a thin straw down to 4 inches in length and tape the top of it shut.
- Tape the thin straw to the wrong side of one rocket piece. Leave about 1.5 inches of straw sticking out of the bottom of the rocket, and stop the tape 1/2-inch from the edge of the rocket, as pictured.
- Tape or glue the edges of the rockets together along the edges, leaving the bottom edge open.
- Slip the thicker straw over the thinner straw end that is sticking out of the rocket.
- Blow into the straw and watch your straw rocket take off!

I consider, that you are mistaken. Let’s discuss. Write to me in PM, we will talk.

how did you get them to stop wrinkling when you try to tape or glue the two sides together? I’ve been trying and it looks all weird/wrinkled… any special trick? making these for my son’s party
I can’t get the rocket straws to work. Is there a certain type of paper/ cardstock/ cardboard I need to use? Or tape?
Hey Lisa, I used normal printer/copy paper (nothing heavy like cardstock) so that it would be lighter and “take off” easier.
Cute project! This is actually a Saturn V rocket. Apollo 11 was one of the missions launched with this type of rocket.
Thank your son for this fun idea. I will try this with my grandchildren the next time they visit. And I may try it myself!
